Uranus, Missouri
While driving back home from Silver Dollar City in 2021, my husband, Luke, and I spotted an odd sign off one of the exit ramps. The sign proclaimed that there was a Route 66 stop there, a town called Uranus Missouri. If the name wasn’t enough to make us stop, statues of dinosaurs and aliens surrounding the sign settled it.
We parked, exited the car, and proceeded to walk around Uranus (every pun intended). The area is set up to look like the main market street of a town. You don’t have to pay anything unless you decide to buy fudge or a souvenir. There is also a small sideshow for a small fee but we weren’t really interested in that. I did buy some of the fudge though and it was delicious.
The true fun of this stop is just walking around. It is a great place to stop and stretch your legs if on a long car trip, as we were. There is a prison and several shops to walk around, all boasting signs and décor abusing the ‘town’ name. I say town loosely as it has only 25 residents and is more a destination than a town. The owner of the entire setup is self-proclaimed mayor.
Another thing to know about this stop is it is the site of a Guinness World Record holder, the largest belt buckle. You can sit and eat ice cream beside the belt buckle while an electronic band plays.
Overall, this wasn’t a super exciting stop or one that I would go out of my way for. It was unique though and it was fun to take pictures beside the statues and signs in the area. If you happen to be passing by, stop and check it out, just there is not enough there to warrant driving any time out of your way to see it otherwise.
